Caring For Oiled Oak Furniture |

|
Like all solid wood, oak carries small blemishes and imperfections, which are part of the natural growth characteristics of the tree. These features can include small knots, slight cracking and variations in grain pattern and colour. These should not be regarded as faults, indeed they are an integral part of the character and beauty of oak, making every piece unique.
Oak mellows in colour due to the action of light on the wood. To avoid unwanted shading in the surface of the wood it is advisable not to leave ornaments, etc. in one place for too long. These should be moved around every few days during the first months that the furniture is in your home.
With a matt oiled finish, the surface of oak furniture remains in a natural state. It should be dusted regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth, wiped in the direction of the grain. Avoid heavy buffing which could cause shiny patches. On no account should chemicals or abrasive cleaners be used. If the wood starts to look dry over time it can be refreshed by light re-oiling with Danish oil or boiled linseed oil. These materials are available from most DIY stores or specialist wood finish shops. Be sure to follow the instructions on the can carefully.
